Blue Ridge Parkway

Stretching 469 beautiful miles, the Blue Ridge Parkway stretches from the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. There’s no cost to travel the Blue Ridge Parkway. For camping, there’s a $16 charge per site. The fee is reduced for visitors with an Interagency Senior or Access Pass (or former Golden Age or Golden Access Passports).

Safety Tips

When you leave your car to explore nature, make sure to lock any valuables in the trunk or take them with you. When hiking, wear hiking shoes or boots and always stay on established trails. And bring your own drinking water as the water in streams or springs may contain harmful bacteria.

Rules of the Road

It?s important to follow the speed limit, which is 45 miles per hour. There are no commercial vehicles allowed on the Parkway. Bikers and motorcyclers are prohibited from driving on trails, but welcome on the Parkway itself.

Dogs are certainly welcome to explore the areas around the Parkway with you. However, you must have your four-legged friend on a leash at all times, especially on the hiking trails.

The best time of year to take the drive is also the busiest. In the fall, the orange sassafras, golden poplars, and scarlet sourwoods are in full bloom and everyone wants to witness the magical colors. You definitely won’t regret it.
